Tips for Participating in Online Classes

Tips for participating in online courses, online classes! Can you imagine a discussion of this topic years ago when all students went to a school building and the teacher stood at the front of the room, used chalk to write on the board, erased the board with dusty felt erasers and called on students infrequently, as they sat quietly in their assigned seats, calmly raising their hands to be permitted to offer an answer. Somewhere from then to now, classrooms have changed and part of that change is the delivery system of online learning now available. Fast forward to the 21st century where blackboards, chalk and erasers have been joined by computers, the Internet and what we call online classes.

What does this shift in education delivery method require from students hoping to succeed in class? Curiously, many of the same attitudes and behaviors that shape and drive success in a traditional classroom are necessary in the online classroom. Just as students in traditional classrooms need expertise in both process, how the classroom works, and content, what materials or skills are mastered there, so it is in the online classroom.

Take a look at some tips for successful participating in an online class, and note the similarities and differences, as you plan your transition from the traditional classroom setting to online classes.

It all starts with the desire to succeed, and that shapes your vision for the experience. Once you have the vision, all other behaviors and attitudes flow from that.

Therefore:
Tip #1. Create your vision for each online class.
Tip #2. Specify your goals for the class, writing them down, include frequency of signing on, number of responses to peers, etc.
Tip #3. Develop a schedule for working on and posting assignments, inclass participation time with your peers.
Tip #4.Establish how you will maintain your level of motivation. Perhaps joining with an accountability' partner and share deadlines, meeting goals with.
Tip #5. Research net etiquette to ensure staying within the guidelines of what is acceptable in this venue.
Tip#6. Prepare your confidence and competence with the platform being used to deliver the course. Investigate the components of the online classroom, i.e. dropbox, chat, DocSharing.
Tip #7. Find a basic grammar book and keep it handy, remembering that some, or perhaps many, someones will read your posted work.
