Just about everyone who has actually tried the Atkins Diet can testify to its very quick and dramatic results. Some people have even lost over 100 pounds by following the Atkins Diet. Therefore, it amazes me how many people are so quick to criticize the Atkins Diet, and say that it doesn't work.
In my opinion, the question "Does the Atkins Diet Really Work?" isn't really a relevant question. Too many people are living proof that the diet does work, and no one would be able to convince them otherwise. The better question and where the most argument lies is in the question "Is the Atkins Diet Healthy?"
The Atkins Diet is a low carbohydrate diet, meaning you are not allowed to have significant amounts of sugar in any form. The point of this is to get your body into a stage of ketosis. Ketosis is the word "low-carbers" use to communicate whether or not they are burning fat. Therefore, breads, candy, fruits, and starches are not allowed on this diet, as they would prevent you from entering into and staying in ketosis.
The argument is, that cutting these foods from your diet, leaves only meats, cheeses, and small amounts of vegetables for consumption. This causes the concern that most of your daily diet would come from foods that are high in fat, and low in nutritional value. This would be a legitimate argument, if it were true.
However, Atkins dieters are discouraged from eating foods higher in fat. They are encouraged to choose leaner meats instead, and are advised to limit the amounts of cheese that they eat. They are also encouraged to take daily vitamin supplements to replace nutrients lost from removing fruits and other foods from the diet.
It is the responsibility of those who choose to go on this diet to be wise about it. If all you do is sit around and eat foods that are high in fat all the time, of course you aren't going to lose weight, and you put yourself at high risk for heart disease. But, if you do the diet correctly, and make the best decisions for your body, this diet should work very well for you. There is no easy way to diet and be successful. It always takes work to achieve great results.
