Web site reviews: MySpace.com

The Fox-owned website Myspace.com is a website that just about everyone has heard about at one time or another. Unless the person has been in a coma, or has managed to remain completely unexposed to the internet in the last two years when the website really picked up, they know what "a place for friends" means. However, popularity does not always result from a great website.

Lets start with the perks: a very powerful social networking tool, an almost infinitely profile, increased security measures in recent weeks and a deep availability of topics including music, movies, comedy and others. MySpace capatialized on the current standing internet community, which thrived on sites such as Geocities.com, a previously popular page where you could design your own website for free, and took the idea to another level when they added features such as friends, comments and bulletins. Combining the three most used features of the internet which leads back to keeping contacts with familiar faces, community blogging, and forums.

The almost infinitely customizable profile MySpace offers you is much like the freedom that a Geocities or similar free web-host would offer you. The difference is on MySpace you can easily spread your profile, promote your ideas, and become involved in the community of MySpace users (now over an astounding 100,000,000 users). MySpace really landed it big when they offered the ability for bands to promote themselves so easily and birthed the age of more regional touring bands then the United States had ever seen, due in large part to the ability of the bands to network with other venues, bands and promoters via the site's users.

MySpace also proves as a useful tool for new filmmakers, comedians and other venues of entertainment. Recently adding its own YouTube like video feature where approximately 70,000 videos are uploaded daily and a picture uploading system that allows you add virtually a limitless collection of photos to your profile MySpace has taken a firm grip on internet traffic and frequently ranks in the top 5 most visited websites on the planet. Recently MySpace has been able to expand its user base far beyond the teen age bracket and has many middle aged adults finding appeal in the website as a way to meet new people.

However, it's not all glory for the popular networking website. While many of the features are designed extremely solidly, the unique ability for users to completely customize their profiles combined with the lack of knowledge
