Gaining notoriety and success in any endeavor, whether it be business, entertainment or any genre of writing, but to name just a few, the very first hurdle to leap over, the first challenge to take an aspiring, or even experienced writer, out of the starting gate is to release that sense of intimidation that goes with publishing your writing before or alongside the works of others you perceive to write with greater skills than your own.
Intimidation can also be expressed as a fear. Fear of what? Fear of rejection, the same fear that anyone who puts themselves out there for others to see, hear, or read. No matter what career path we take, whether one of the many traditional jobs, a profession, entertainment or writing occupation, if one wishes to achieve any measure of success they have got to stand out among the crowd, step away from the security of a drawn curtain before them, and expose themselves for all the world to see.
There is a first time for everything and we learn this from the day we are born until the day we die. Many if not all of those first times are preceded by a sense of nervous anticipation, intimidation or fear that we must either overcome and move forward or succumb to and step back or aside.
Look at people who have gained fame in the movie or television industry. At one point in time they were unknown, yet they possessed a gift and overcame their own sense of intimidation to step out onto that stage or in front of that camera and showed their viewing audience what they were made of...and the rest is history.
As writers our challenges are no different. What sparks the desire and energy to achieve notoriety as a writer? First and foremost a writer must love to write and keep writing for the sake of writing. Exceptional writing talent does not come from born talent. Good writing must be learned and developed through painstaking study, repetition, editing, and feedback from those who form opinion about one's publications.
The best source of constructive critique for one's writing is through those persons having greater experience and skill level as authors themselves. A writer must learn from others who have established recognition and success in the writing field. After all, as children and young adults going through the educational system we have relied upon the expertise of others all along in order to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in our chosen career path.
The same approach must apply to writers.
