Tattoos: Purposes

A tattoo can have a different purpose to every single person. To some they come with age, wisdom, a right of passage..to other's it's an expression of yourself, to remember hard times and good times, to commemorate an event, to keep a lost loved one near and to some it's "just because". I myself have 2 tattoos and both are close to my heart and have a meaning. I am not one to just go into a tattoo shop and pick out the first pretty or cool picture I come across. My humble opinions is that a tattoo is sacred, this is something you live with for the rest of your life. Sure you can get it covered or removed, but you made the decision to get it in the first place and even if it is removed or covered...in a sense it will always be there. You will never forget it.

I am the first to admit that I love tattoos, I will stare at people with tattoos, not because I am trying to be rude or thinking OH MY GOD!, but because I am admiring the artwork. At times I find myself trying to jump into a persons mind and character based on what tattoo they have. I see a girl with the name Mark in cursive on her neck, I wonder if it is a husband, boyfriend, or child or maybe that young love she thought would last. I see a man with a pinup on his arm, is this representing a female in his life, his favorite actress, a time in his life, or does he simply like a half naked woman on his arm because she is beautiful? I don't "judge" people by the tattoos they have or don't have. If you are covered head to toe in tattoos, so be it, it is your body. Just because the can of coke on your back means nothing to me, doesn't mean it doesn't to you.

It does tend to go through me when I am around someone that has gotten a tattoo because they thought it looked cool. Again I am not judging you, I just am set in my ways of thinking that a tattoo should be meaningful. But really it is no different than the fact, I color my hair. I do it because I want to, not because it means anything or will mean anything to someone else. I was listening on the radio the other morning and one of the host's mother was going to get her first tattoo. Her mother was in her 50's and decided she wanted a lower back tattoo. Now her daughter was quick to tell her that the lower back tattoo was referred to as the "tramp stamp". She talked on the radio of how she was unsure what to think, that the location of the tattoo is what she was having trouble with. Though she wasn't going to try to talk her out of it, because she was going
