Wearing body armor is obviously inappropriate in most, if not all realms of the business world. Likewise, a negligee, diamond grill or jeweled crown would presumably also be deemed ill-suited for a professional environment and likely harm one's professional reputation. Similarly, because self image displays itself through a person's physical appearance, attitude and work ethic as plainly as the shirt on that person's back, it is imperative that a person seeking success in business evaluate what they say to the world about themself. A person cannot completely control the way s/he is perceived by others; however, half of the basis for another person's perception of you begins with you, the way you think of yourself and the way you think yourself in realtion to the world around you.

Your self-perception (self image) is not as private as you might think it is. Your thoughts and opinions of yourself in relation to the world and in relation to other people tend to interact with your inborn temperament, thereby forming the foundation for your reactions and responses to your environment. Your personality manifests through your reactions to the world. Because your reactions to the world begin with your own thoughts, your throughts are inevitably projected into the world through your personality whenever you and the world interact. Thus, controlling your thoughts in order to maintain a self image appropriate to your surroundings is essential for your successful integration into any particular environment - the world of business is no exception.

Creating and maintaining a positive, appropriate self-image begins with your thoughts and actions both at work and outside of work. Having a comfortable, satisfying personal life is very important because it will create in you contentment, which will be passed on to those around you. Personal contentment has a way of attracting others by subliminally promising them that you are healthy for them and that they will be rewarded in some way by interacting with you. But it is essential that you remember that in the world of business, when it comes to revealing details of your personal life in any way at work, less is always better. The value of your personal life is immense. Yet its power is diminished when it is discussed at work. Your personal life is a part of your self image and your self image will carry you simply by being brilliant, not by being discussed.

When you have a healthy self image by thinking appropriately about yourself, thinking appropriately about others and remaining committed to appropriate attitudes in the business world, it will be easy to adjust to any situation or work environment in a healthy, productive way. Keep the thoughts positive and keep the business professional. Your self image will shine through your moment to moment decisions and actions. Provided that your self-image is in good shape, preceded of course by positive and compassionate thinking of oneself and everyone else, your self-image will be the difference between stumbling and striding confidently through the world of business.
