How pornography harms society

by Naomi

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are warned against pornography and have been told of its dangers to us individually, to the family and in turn to society.

Pornography refers to explicit depictions of sexual activity in written or pictorial form in an exploitive style to get erotic arousal for commercial gain.

We as members of the church condemns all forms of pornography. Most pornography presents highly inaccurate, unscientific, and distorted information about human sexuality. We view sexuality as something positive - as a sacred gift from God with the primary purposes of reproducing life and bonding the husband and wife together in an eternal, affectionate, committed relationship.

Pornography is an attack on the family and the marriage covenant. It degrades sex and creates an unhealthy extramarital sexual interest in individuals.

Pornography often depicts and thereby promotes violence and aggression against females and advocates other sexual deviations. Studies suggest four possible consequences of pornography: (1) addiction to pornography, (2) desire for increasingly deviant material, (3) desensitization to the inappropriateness or abnormality of the behavior portrayed, and (4) acting out sexually what is portrayed, often leading to disease. Pornography also leads to a loss of contact with, and consciousness of, God and the Holy Spirit. The Church counsels its members as responsible citizens to work for legal limits on the dissemination, broadcast, sale, and rental of illegal pornographic materials.

I have personally seen what pornography has done to a marriage of someone very close to me. I could see the insecurities the wife felt with her husband looking at pornographic material. It brought a sense of disrespect into the home, the wife disrespecting the husband and visa versa. It brought about a dullness in the eyes of the husband that spoke of true unhappiness.

In effect, whatever happens in the home, in the family, goes out into society. In the end society will end up with more criminal behaviour and failed family values which leads to failed values in society.

Pornography is an evil influence in society and should be condemned.
