A Phone Call From You
-
I fell asleep last night and woke
on a cold sandy beach in Hawaii
amidst a caper
involving diamond thieves
heroes
and rogues
when the call came in.
It was you.
And you told me about your niece
and the trouble she'd been in
and I laughed and listened
and told you that's the sort of thing she always did.
Then we talked about the house
and the day you had at school
and it was so damned good
to hear your voice again.
It must have been twenty minutes in when
I finally stepped up
the courage to say
how much I missed you because
I knew
that crossing that line would end the dream
and it did,
that opening my mouth would admit it a lie
and it was,
that letting myself cry would wash away the sand
and leave me back here
without a forwarding number.
