The Animal Planet Network is a unique television network. It is all animal programming, all of the time. Everything from pet-training, to animal cops, to safari documentaries, and much more airs on this network 24 hours a day. This may not be ground-breaking television, or even compelling drama (though it does reach these heights at times), but it is consistently entertaining and often very informative.
I often tire of watching the people on reality-TV squabble and make-out, misbehave and cry about it. Sometimes it is just soothing to watch animals do what animals do. It is also a network my whole family can agree on-even our three cats! It can be twice as entertaining to watch my kitties watch Animal Planet.
Though Animal Planet is not known for its high-drama programming, it does have quite a few dramatic shows. I defy anyone not to become emotionally invested in Meerkat Manor. One episode is all it takes to fall head over anthropomorphic paws in love with these adorable and vicious meerkats. Orangutan Island is another show that draws you in as you get to know animals that you might never get the chance to understand otherwise.
This network is also a great place to learn more about the animals closest to you-your pets! Shows like It's Me or The Dog and Petfinder, explain pet behavior and teach owners how to encourage the behavior they want and discourage the behavior that they do not want. Its a good place to learn about common pet problems and common pet-owner problems, and how to fix them.
I also like to watch shows about travel, and Animal Planet offers several programs that combine travel and animals. Corwin's Quest, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and Planet's Best with Terri and Bindi all offer a terrific combination of travel and the animals found in exotic locations.
In summary, Animal Planet may not offer a plethora of different viewing options, but it does offer consistently entertaining programming about animals. It is a network that you can count on to deliver upon what it's promised: quality, informative, and creative programming that the whole family (including your pets) will enjoy.
