The importance of self-image in the business world

to changing one's self image. Just as plastic surgery can remove physical scars, it can also remove mental scars as well. This removal of mental scars depends on how we view ourselves in spite of falls and setbacks. "Changing your self-image does not mean changing your self, or improving your self, but changing your own mental picture, your own estimation, conception, and realization of that self...Self-acceptance means accepting and coming to terms with ourselves now, just as we are, with all our faults, weaknesses, shortcomings, errors, as well as our assets and strengths. Self-acceptance is easier, however, if we realize that these negatives belong to us - they are not us...You may have made a mistake, but this does not mean that you are a mistake." Accepting this statement is conducive to having a "sound mind". If we suffer a setback in the business world, we should not crumble into oblivion if we develop this type of thinking. Instead, we see the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel".

In order to weather storms that can affect our image, it is essential to set our sails in a new direction when it is necessary. Striving after reachable goals that are compatible with our self-image can move us to be productive in the business world in spite of difficult times. Dr. Maltz wrote, "We are engineered as goal-seeking mechanisms. We are built that way. When we have no personal goal which we are interested in and which "means something" to us, we are apt to "go around in circles," feel "lost" and find life itself "aimless" and "purposeless". Many in the business world have found themselves in a quagmire because of not having clearly defined objectives that reflects their standards and identity. Being in business without a goal is like having a ship without a sail. It will be tossed about and possibly wrecked. Yet, if a ship has the anchor and sails, it can persevere virtually any storm. Similarly, if we have an adequate and healthy self-image, along with reachable goals, we should be successful in navigating this business world.
