The importance of self-image in the business world

with this self image." Yes, Maltz and many others find that we act like who we conceive ourselves to be. This is highly evident in the work world. Throughout his book, Maltz related case studies of attorneys, salesmen, executives, and others, who because of poor self-image, performed poorly on their jobs. One example was that of a salesman who suffered a facial disfigurement as a result of an automobile accident. Being as to where his job required public contact, the salesman's scars affected not only his physical image, but also his self-image. Maltz continued to write, "For the first time in his life he became painfully self-conscious. He was ashamed of himself and felt that his appearance must be repulsive to others. The scar became an obsession with him...He began to lose confidence in himself...Soon almost all his attention was directed toward himself-and his primary goal became the protection of his ego and the avoidance of situations which might bring humiliation."

From this instance, we can see how an individual's image of himself directly impacted his job performance. We have seen this in many avenues of work, whether it is in sports, law, medicine, or business. Professional teams have sports psychologists on hand to help an individual who may be going through a hitting or shooting slump. Lawyers can second guess their abilities if they lose an argument in court. Surgeons may become shaken up if a patient that is under their care dies because of an accident or mishap that occurs during surgery. Business owners may wonder if it is still feasible for them to run a business if they suffer profit losses for a few months. If individuals allow themselves to dwell on negative circumstances, this could paralyze their ability to perform and get out of a rut. Yet, Maltz related another discovery in reference to self-image: "The self-image can be changed.
Numerous case histories have shown that one is never too young nor too old to change his self image and thereby start to live a new life."

Whenever we encounter setbacks and failures, it is essential for us to see that we are not bound by these failures. It is important for us to appreciate that if we fall, we can get back up. Charles Kettering, a leading inventor in the early part of the 20th century, wrote that "any young man who wants to be a scientist must be willing to fail 99 times before he succeeds once, and suffer no ego damage because of it." Maltz used the principles of plastic surgery when it comes
