Sunday Morning Christian
A Sunday morning Christian is best described as sanctimoniously deceived. It is a condition that has probably crept into their innermost spiritual being. For some Sunday morning Christians it has been tradition that has brought them to this point. Sunday morning going to church has always been what was expected of "decent God fearing people." These Christians believe God looks forward to their presence in church on Sunday and to them giving polite and pious "holy kisses" to other parishioners.
As a matter of fact, Isaiah speaks about this in his book as he writes a woe to Ephraim. He is speaking to people who have not grown spiritually in the things and knowledge of God. They have instead become ritualistic. Examine what he says:
Isaiah 28:9-11
(9)"Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breast. (10)For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little;(11)For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people."
These people have been reduced to dead formalism. They are ritual worshipers. Going to church has become a process of "rote learning," they don't expect anything from God. It has become "precept upon precept, line upon line." In fact, they now think they are doing God a service by their presence. They are shocked, mystified and offended when troubles come into their lives. Why has God done this to me? They question God and that is why the question comes back. "Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? The answer is they have not been "weaned from milk and drawn from the breasts." A viable Christian grows from "faith to faith." They are weaned from breast milk because they are constantly growing in faith and in knowledge of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Covenant Relationship
Sunday Christians do not realize that they "wrestle not with flesh and blood but with spiritual wickedness in high places." Isaiah goes on to explain in his woe to Ephraim the following.
Isaiah 28:15-16
(15)"Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: (16) Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste."
In spite of the fact, "Sunday Christian" that you have lost the "joy of your salvation," you can be restored, if you wake from your sleep and delusion. This scripture encourages "Sunday Christians," who have fallen into disobedience that God has not given up on them but they must be weaned from breast milk. They are "Milk Toast" Christians. They are not examples of what God's love does to a vital born-again believer. Jesus Christ came into the world and died on the Cross of Calvary for our redemption. We owe Him for our salvation, and this amount to more than just warming the pews of our churches on Sunday morning. Putting in an appearance to "appease the gods" has no place in the kingdom of Our Dear Lord because we are not idol worshipers.
We have entered into a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, God does not hear our prayers unless, we ask our petitions In the Name of Jesus. This should let us know, "in all our ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct our paths." When you know that you know Jesus, there is more than a "Sunday Morning Christian" exuberance about how you express your relationship to Him. Amen.
