The best things about spring are numerous and almost too many to list but the overwhelming sense of anticipation is part of the good things about this season.
At the end of winter, we have all just about come to the end of our tether regarding putting up with cold, dreary days. Initially it was all right, the weather felt right for the time of year, autumn made a change from the heat and winter brought with it magical times like Christmas, snowy days and cosy evening. As winter wore on though it got boring. The trees were bare, the days freezing, the wind keen.
As the days wear on though, our patience starts to wear thin and the joys of winter are increasingly hard to find. Then, slowly, a change in the air is felt. Temperatures start to rise just a bit at first, the first buds appear on the trees, giving branches and twigs little swellings at the end.
An air of expectation replaces the gloomy winter dreariness. The first flowers start to poke their heads through the soil and birds begin to greet each new day with a chorus of song. The undergrowth rustles and the air becomes full of active birds as animals seek mates and begin to build nests for their off spring. Courting is well under way and birds coo and fight, squirrels chase each other, fighting for dominance.
The world seems to stop briefly towards the middle of spring as if waiting for a special event. Suddenly, spring starts again. New babies are born to birds, mammals and now activity increases as the parents seek food to feed their growing families.
Spring in the cities is especially wonderful. Evenings begin to lengthen, people begin to spend time outside cafes and bars and everyone feels they have more space. The heaths come to life, the pavements feel more inviting and you can walk without a jacket. Parks offer places of peace and refuge. Everywhere you look, leaves are growing and flowers coming into bloom.Water inlakes and streams no longer looks cold and uninviting but sparkles with life. The light is different with more sunlight and longer hours of day. The cities wake from their sleep and the promise of summer is just around the corner.
