horse has to finish in first place to collect. One could by a place ticket, meaning the horse has to finish first or second to win. And one could buy a show ticket, meaning a horse has to finish, first, second, or third to win.

Then there is the daily double, picking winners of the first and second race. And there is also the Exacta, picking the first two finishers of a race in the exact order, first and second. Plus there are other bets like the Trifecta, picking the top three horses in order for one race or three winners in three consecutive races.

Needless to say, betting on the ponies is a gamble. Some horses look like sure winners, but lose. Other horses look like sure losers, and win. In the end, it's really unpredictable to pick a winner. The horse that has the strongest odds, say 2 to 1, could be a favorite, meaning if you put four dollars on the horse, you'll get eight dollars if the horse wins.

Nevertheless it's a gamble. It's fun to visit the racetrack and make small bets. Two or four dollars will provide fun. Seeing horses race around the track is suspenseful. One never knows, until the horses cross the finish line. When you bet, however, you must realize that no horse is a sure winner before the race starts. And for that matter, no horse is a sure loser.
