How to bet at the horse track

A lucky charm works just as well as mathematical figuring. Yet, one could do the math and hope the horse's prior statistics of previous races work in your favor. Don't bet on winning every time, however, horses are fickle.

In a nutshell, to place a bet one goes to a local racetrack or a government operated betting parlor. Bets as low as two dollars to thousands of dollars could be wagered. At the racetrack and betting parlors there are cashiers who take your bet. Signs are clearly marked on where to and how to bet. Once you put your money down, you are giving a receipt, and if you win, you return to where you had placed your bet and you collect your winnings.

So how does one win? That's the question. One afternoon, I worked out a betting system that worked. I won that night at the local racetrack betting on trotters, horses with carriages. The following time, however, I lost at the track with the same mathematical system. So much for a betting pattern, it's tough to pick winners every time out.

My system before I laid money down on a horse was to look at the newspapers and daily racing form. I jotted down the horses the horse racing writers predicted for that day. One newspaper had predictions from five writers, while the other newspaper only one writer. Since at that time there were three daily newspapers in my area that covered racing, I had a bunch of predictions.

So I gave points on each prediction. If a writer guessed that one horse would win the race, I gave that horse five points. If the horse was predicted to end in third place, I gave that horse one point. For second three points. I tallied all of the writer's predictions. Then I looked at the racing newspaper, which had more specific information, including race-rack conditions during the horse's prior races. If the horse had preformed well on a muddy track, and if it were raining that night, I would give that horse points. I also looked at the claiming purses. If the horse did well in a high stakes claiming race, I would give that horse points.

In the end, I would total all of the points and bet on the horses with the highest points at the racetrack if the odds on the board were attractive enough. Sometimes, I would bet a horse to place, a first or second place finish wins, if the horse had a lot of points and was going off at attractive odds but still wasn't a clear favorite.

For those who don't know, there are many different bets one could make at the racetrack. One could buy a win ticket, meaning the
