The youth of today ... a lost generation?

The youth of today...a lost generation? The youth of today are no more lost than the young people from previous generations. They are confronted with challenges and changes that the past generations have had to reckon with. This generation of youths must experience similar challenges that older generations have faced in the past but must face them in different way by finding their own solutions.

Never before in our history has technology been so entwined in human lives. In order to compete for jobs the youths of today must be able to keep up with the current and constantly changing technology. Computers, cell phones, robots and cars that park themselves. Things could change in a short period of time. Young people need to be able to meet the new challenges presented by the dynamic nature of technology.

The days of the horse and buggy are long gone. In place of the mule drawn plow farmers must be able to purchase, operate and fix equipment that is computer run. Computer operation is currently a basic job requirement for many positions in the job market. High school diplomas alone are not enough to qualify many of the current job applicants for employment. Training in computers, robotics and higher technical fields are necessary for our youth to obtain employment in today's job market.

American history offers many examples of past problems that each new and upcoming generation had to face. Economic, political, war, health care and substance abuse. All of these problems are not new. They have occurred over and over in American society for over two centuries. The youth's of today must face these same old problems within the context of their time, not the times of previous generations.

The United States has had periods of large scale unemployment, unrestrained immigration, terrorism, war, drug and alcohol abuse through out its history. Solutions to these same recurring problems were different for each generation of Americans. The youth of today must find their own solutions. Our young people are not lost, but they are searching for solutions to their problems.
