Reflections: How to reach for the stars

that I want to do in life!" Mary said all of this in one breath. I just sat there staring at this child with the infinite wisdom in her eyes. Pale, tiny little Mary. Where did this child come from?

About that time, her mother walked in the door carrying a small, wiggling little boy with dark brown hair and the most gorgeous blue eyes that you ever did see. As soon as he saw Mary, he fled from his mothers embrace and into her arms. Laughing, Mary scooped him up as if it were nothing and hugged and kissed him.

"I am truly sorry if my daughter here bothered you. Sometimes, she is quite difficult to get to stop talking. My little chatterbox!" She said and took the seat next to Mary. Mary and the little boy, Jakob, was the name she called him, went over to the little toy area to play for a while. "She likes to try to help people. I don't know how she does it sometimes. She is such a delight to have in my life and I cherish every single second that I have with her. God has truly blessed us!"

"How long has she been sick?" I asked.

"For about five years now. They keep telling us that this is the last year and somehow she seems to outshine everyone and everything. She perseveres while the rest of us flounder," Mary's mother wiped a tear from her eyes. "She keeps reminding me every day that it is a blessing. That God truly is watching over us and that we can do anything... ANYTHING! At her age, she has already read the entire Bible, almost every medical journal that she can get her hands on. Everything. She just devours knowledge. She wants to know everything, experience everything. I am just heart-stricken that she will never get the chance to love. To find that one true love that outlasts anything, even death itself. She has this fantasy that she will grow up and find a man in a park, feeding the ducks on the lake. They will look up at each other and just know that they were destined to be together forever."

Little Mary walked over about that time and looked at me with such wide eyed innocence. "YOU can do it for me! Yes, yes... you can find true love. Then a piece of me will live on in you."

"MARY TURNER" a voice came over the loud speaker.

"That's us. It was nice to meet you," Mary's mother said.

I left that day knowing that anything is possible. I can be anyone that I want to be... do anything that I want to do. I can fly to the moon and back on the wings of an angel. I can reach for the stars and capture entire planets if I just have the desire and will to do so. Thank you Mary, for giving me the will to live... to strive to better myself.. to see the beauty within. And may you rest in peace. Mary Turner born 1-1-01; died 10-13-08
