Reflections: How to reach for the stars

Reach for the stars? How can I? How can I do anything at all? My heart has been torn out and thrown to the wolves. I don't know how to pick up the pieces and move on with my life. The man that I knew... just KNEW was destined to be with me for eternity told me that it was over. OVER! How can that be? We had been perfectly happy together for almost a decade now. Two beautiful children, a mortgage, the SUV that we had dreamed about together. Hell, the only thing that was missing was the white picket fence! (And to tell you the truth, we had been talking about that as well!) Apparently, while he was away on a business trip, one of the younger co-workers showed him just what he was missing. He actually asked me if I ever thought about whether the grass was greener on the other side of the pasture! And something about how you don't always want the same old saltine... sometimes you want a Ritz. What in the heck does that mean anyways?

As I was walking through the doorway to the clinic with my head down pondering my circumstances, I held the door for a child of about 7. A frail, thin little thing, bald as a babies bottom. This little girl looked up at me with eyes sparkling and told me that things won't always seem this bad. I cocked my head and looked at her. Who was she to give me advice? A mere child thinks that she understands what I am going through! HA! I walked past the little girl, checked in at the desk and took a seat. Next thing I knew, the little girl is right next to me again.

"My name is Mary. I have leukemia. My mom works just down the block so I walk here for my treatments and tests and she meets up with me. My little brother sometimes helps with my treatments. He does blood tests and has the doctor give it to me. He says that he wants to be like me when he grows up. He is four years old. I told him that when I grow up I want to be a anesthesiologist because they make all the pain go away for people. I would like that.. I think that if I try really hard I can have everything done for school by the time that I am twenty-four years old and then I can help other kids like me. I want nothing more than for the other kids that I do treatments to not have to hurt any more. You look like you are hurting. Is it your tummy? If I were older, I would be able to help you with that. I could make you happy again. I think that I would be good at that. My mama says that if you just keep your head up, you can do anything that you want. Anything! There are sooo many things
