Novel Excerpts

Novel excerpts: Science fiction

K'tur is a planet in the Y'karin sector of the Milky Way galaxy. That is to say, K'tur is far from Terra Prime and not known by many of the other species living much nearer Terra Prime. Being one of seven planets orbiting the star K'tur is the only reasonably habitable planet in orbit. There are two other planets, one closer and one further away from the sun, that are habitable but conditions are harsher.

Chosen for an agro-colony, many people from all over our T'rbeo or alliance in your words, applied to take part in the experiments. Botanists, farmers, orchard keepers, people from all farming backgrounds competed for positions. Farmers were not the only ones who applied for transfer to K'tur. Potters, glassblowers, veterinarians, greenhouse keepers, beekeepers, smiths of all types, mechanically minded people, and those who studied ancient arts like milling grains, harness making, and wheel and wagon making. Fishermen and fish farmers joined the ranks as well as boat builders, sail makers, and net weavers. Educators assisted with less well known occupations by both learning and teaching the finer details of trades that were once necessary to communities.

Builders learned to use native materials and ancient construction methods like pegging instead of using nails or screws. Construction of granaries made use of stone and types of concrete to hold the produce safely, while keeping marauding thieves, like rodents out as much as possible. Weavers learned to process animal and plant fibers into thread and then into cloth. Leather processing and working was almost a lost art, but for information stored in the library archives as historic documents. Educators interested in leather-working learned the processes involved, following the instructions they found meticulously recorded, and then taught others what they had learned. People even learned paper-making and the methods of making pencils and inks for pens to write with instead of using computers, and other technology. They were truly taking themselves into history.

The main reasoning behind more ancient modes of travel and farming was to preserve the planet and its ecosystem. Peoples of other worlds discovered the damage they did to their own home worlds, some almost too late to repair the damage. Many learned to convert industrial waste into useful components of other industries. Others learned how to break down the waste products to their more basic components, rendering them harmless
