Short stories: Deja vu

A Tale from Mrs. C's Biology Class

Although I eventually ended up studying a biological science like botany in college, biology was not one of my best subjects while in high school. In fact I was so bad at it that I had to take the same course three years in a row. Unfortunately, I also had the same teacher for three years in a row.

Mrs. C was an elderly, frail woman whose only pleasure in life was studying her biological science. She was what I would call today a very dedicated teacher, but in those days I referred to her as a little strange. Mrs. C was a little blind and didn't see so great and she also had hearing problems but she was really a dedicated biology teacher.

I would always act up when in her class and would kid around continuously with my friends until one of us got caught and scolded, which was all the time. Usually the one to get caught and scolded was me and after a while I began getting a little tired of it.

Now, just because I had the same biology class for three years was no indication of my ability to think and reason and I decided it was time for me to get my revenge. I got to class a little early on that particular winter day and was doing my usual clowning around in the rear of the classroom when Mrs. C entered the room. Immediately she strolled up to me an began providing me with the usual speech about needing a good understanding of biological principle to appreciate life. Having been brought up to respect my elders I merely stood there, shaking my head in compliance and hoping she would quickly finish her speech and leave me alone.

As soon as she turned to head up to the front of the classroom and to her desk, I once again began my daily clowning around. This time Mrs. C was taking none of my nonsense and she quickly moved me to the front of the class. Now this is really an embarrassing and disgracing situation for the class clown to be sitting in the front row of the class. Where was my audience? I'll tell you where, they were all behind me. Keep in mind that at this time my friend Jerry was in the rear of the classroom laughing his tail off and feeling quite smug with himself. Revenge shall be mine I thought.

I sat very quietly in my front row sit for just about the complete class period and then an idea struck me. Okay Jerry, I thought now we will see who is best at this sort of things. I sat up in my straight in my seat and watched the teacher as she instructed our class on the fine points of chromosomes. Finally, my opportunity was
