Essays: Death of a loved one

Left, right, left, right; the car swayed from one side to another. Damn this is one twisted road' he thought as he zig zagged along the straight wide highway. Other cars honked and passed him by, some screamed words of profanity. He laughed, he didn't know why but he couldn't seem to stop. He laughed louder and louder, it had started to rain now. He slammed his hand against the steering wheel laughing at all the bright colored droplets twinkling on his windshield preventing him seeing. There was more honking, just like a flipped switch his laughter turned to anger. His foot pressed harder down on the accelerator. The car leapt forward and collided into another car. He was jolted forward hitting his head against the windshield leaving him unconscious but what he didn't know was that the car he had rammed into hit the railing, flipped over and landed on the other side of the highway smack into oncoming traffic.

She was so happy, talked about it for weeks on end as she prepared for the trip. It was all she ever talked about. She was going to Ireland, her eldest daughter was having a baby, her first and she was on her way there for the delivery. It was her first trip alone, never before in their thirty two years of marriage had she ever left her husband behind.

It was only day after she arrived in Ireland that her daughter gave birth to a little baby girl. At this joyful occasion her daughter's mother in law too flew in to meet her first grandchild. She was there for a month and a half. The two grandmothers bonded over the little child, their pride, their happiness could be heard over the phone. They threw a baby warming party, shopped, talked and went on walks. Her son in law took a few days off work so that they could go sightseeing.

Her trip was coming to an end; her last weekend and they thought it would be a good idea for a road trip. Her son in law had some relatives in another city just three hours away. They were driving along the highway; it had gotten dark and had another half an hour of their journey left when it began to rain. Her son in law flicked the windshield wipers on and checked his speed.

They heard a noise and that was the last thing they remembered. It was a few minutes before the son in law gained consciousness, he checked is wife who came too with his help. It took his body some maneuvering in order to get out. A car had landed on top of their car crushing it. Panic and pandemonium ensued. By the time the ambulances arrived my aunt had already died. Her daughter suffered severe internal bleeding, granddaughter untouched while her son in law got away with a few cuts and bruises. His mother was severely injured and had to undergo two surgeries before she too passed away.

The drunk driver walked away with a mild concussion where as the driver of the car landing on my aunt's car broke a leg and a few cuts and bruise. My aunt left behind a traumatized daughter and another son and daughter who were waiting for her back home, her husband; high school sweethearts.

I was getting married only days later.
