We are bombarded with images and testimonials, promoting what we already know that our hair is our crowning glory. Models with bouncy, shiny curls and sexy locks spring out from magazines and billboards, enticing us to buy the products they promote. The average male will spend well over 5 minutes each day, taming his locks. While the average woman uses twice that time. And yet, we are never truly satisfied.

Achieving and maintaining perfect locks is actually quite easy. The trick is to keep it simple.

1. Go basic Look at any child's hair, no matter the color, length or texture and the first thing you'll notice is that all children's hair is soft and shiny. We are all born with perfect hair. Over the years, coloring, perming and using excessive products is what makes our hair go from shiny to lacklustre. Investing in a good quality shampoo and conditioner will go a long way towards bringing back that shine. For excessively damaged hair, treating it to a weekly masque or hot oil treatment is a necessity. Other than that, keep chemical products and treatments away from your hair.

2. Go clean- The frequency of washing your hair depends on its length and texture. Dry hair can actually benefit from a twice weekly wash with a mild shampoo and conditioner to maintain its shine. Excessively oily hair may need more frequent washes to keep it from looking limp and dull. Avoiding heated appliances like blow-dryers and curling irons or keeping their use to a minimum will help. To get thicker looking hair, try using a diffuser on your blow-dryer. This also helps distribute the heat evenly.

3. Get a good cut- A good cut is the key to achieving great looking hair. Always go to a qualified stylist and talk about the various looks you'd like to achieve with your haircut. Even if you're trying to grow out your hair, going in for a trim every 6-8 weeks is a must. There's nothing worse than scraggly looking locks.

4. Use accessories The right accessories can make all the difference especially on a bad hair day. Invest in various types of accessories head bands, clips, barrettes and even the large flower or shiny pins. If you've no time to style your hair, twist it, add some clips and voila, you're ready to face the world. However, remember to use accessories according to the occasion a large flower may not be the right look for a trip to the supermarket and likewise, shiny pins may look odd at your daughter's preschool pick up.

5. Go in for a weekly treat nowadays most spas will do excellent head massages for both men and women. No matter the condition or texture, hair will benefit from a weekly massage. There are a lot of in-home treatments available, from hot oils to hair masques. Choose the right one for you.

Taking care of your hair may seem like a chore, but in actuality, it only takes a few minutes a day to achieve that perfectly styled look.
