Safe

I embraced them all
with smiles and
open arms.
Slowly, through time
spontaneous joy
became drowned
in tears.
Arms grew tired
and stopped reaching;
Love was given
and never returned;
Trust was given
ridicule was my reward.
Now, wrapped
snugly in a
cocoon of caution,
I watch you,
searching for
signs of evil,
purity, humanity,
loyalty, safety,
love or judgement.
I wish to close
my eyes
shut tightly,
to be reckless
and to fly free.
I wish to wait
for the answers
rather than watch
for trouble.
But I must not
I must walk
before I fly...
once I finally
know it is safe.
