Abortion's side effects and consequences

Making the decision to terminate a pregnancy is often extremely difficult, educating yourself about the possible consequences and side effects will help you determine if abortion is the right choice for you. If you decide to have an abortion, there are two types; medical and surgical. For the sake of simplicity this article will discuss the side effects of a surgical abortion. Although, the emotional side effects are generally the same for both. It is important that you speak with the physician who will be performing the abortion to understand the risks involved and what to expect following the procedure. While this is an emotional and upsetting experience, it is vital that the you listen carefully to all the information given to understand and recognize when there is a problem. To help you better comprehend both the physical and psychological side effects and consequences of an abortion, we will explore each in turn. I am not a physician, medical professional or counselor. Physical Consequences
An abortion is an invasive procedure, ideally performed under local or general anesthetic for the patient's comfort and emotional well being. Following an abortion, a you can expect your menstrual cycle to resume within 4-6 weeks. It is possible to become pregnant within that time period so choosing a birth control method prior to your procedure is strongly advised. Your physician can help you determine what type of birth control is best for you. If the physician prescribes antibiotics, it is important that they are taken as directed to prevent an infection.

The following is a list of physical side effects common following an abortion which you may experience for 2-4 weeks after the procedure. These are normal side effects of an abortion, remember your body needs time to recover and you may feel fatigued for a few days after the procedure. If any of these side effects become severe or continue past 4 weeks, or if you have any questions, contact your physician.

- Abdominal pain and cramping
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Spotting and bleeding

More severe, and potentially life threatening side effects are rare, but may occur. They sound scary because they are. The risks involved with abortion are real and very serious. Discuss any questions you may have about these risks with your physician. A caring and responsible physician will explain the likelihood of each risk and
