Horror movies harvest on one of the deepest human emotions, fear. A great scary movie pulls you in and doesn't let you forget what you saw. Over the decades, filmmakers have compiled thousands of horror movies, mostly unsuccessful ones. There are, however, a list of horror movies that sit atop this genre. The following is a list of 5 of the scariest movies I have ever seen:
5. The Ring (2002)- "The Ring" is a film about a journalist who investigates the deaths of some local teenagers who viewed a mysterious video tape a week before their untimely demise. Supposedly, after watching the tape, the viewer receives a call that simply says, "7 days...". A week later, the viewer is found dead. The entity in this movie is the spirit of a young girl that had been killed by her mother many years before. The girls haunting spirit is manifested through the mysterious video, which symbolically portrays her murder. The imagery used in this "death video" is quite unsettling and memorable. The actual movie also uses vivid imagery and a dark tone that make it a must-see in modern horror.
4. The Blair Witch Project (1999)- This film is a pioneer in the horror genre and had the most successful pre-release marketing I have ever seen. Before this movie hit theaters, there were fake documentaries about the Blair Witch put out that many people believed to be real. The marketing and movie alike were trying to sell the idea that the story of the Blair Witch was true. The day the movie was released, many people were still convinced they were about to watch actual footage. The story involves the manifestation of the Blair Witch in the woods in Burkittsville, Maryland. A group of 3 film students set out with their 16mm camera to document this mysterious legend, only to never return again. Their film was all that was recovered! So, the movie is an actual presentation of their final journey on this scratchy 16mm roll of film. After interviewing local townspeople, the 3 students set out into the legendary woods. Throughout the film the students have many creepy encounters with an unseen entity. At one point, they stumble upon what appears to be the grounds of a seance. They also find mysterious objects (crosses, dolls, etc.) outside their tents, and they hear bone-chilling noises at night. The scariest part of all is they can't find their way out of the vast woods. One by one, these 3 students disappear into the blackness of the woods and never seen live again. What sold me on this movie is
