It's the phone owner's worst nightmare. Your phone falls from your grasp and lands with a resounding splash into a puddle or a sink filled with water. Phones and water generally do not mix but accidents happen and people often lose their tempers when on the phone, which can end in the poor device earning an unwelcome bath. There are solutions to reviving a drowned phone, no matter how deep it was submerged. Although it must be said that in cases where the entire unit is submerged for a long period of time, you may find that a new mobile phone will have to be acquired.
I have accidentally knocked glasses over and spilt water all over my phone many times and have found that by carrying out a few careful actions, you can retrieve a soggy phone from uncertain doom. This solution can also be applied to other electronics such as keyboards, mice and game consoles, the latter two of which I have managed to soak by accident in an incident involving orange juice.
As soon as the accident happens and the phone comes in contact with water be sure to fish it out instantly, and if it hasn't turned off already make sure you press the off button. By powering off the phone you are reducing the risk of the electrocution, which is understandably rare, and of damaging the phone's circuits.
Once the phone is out of the water and turned off, start taking it apart as much as you can safely. If you only know how to take off the covers then do so, make sure you remove the battery and covers at least if you can, and place all the components onto a towel and dab dry. Do not use a hair dryer or place the phone near a radiator to dry as this might damage the interior circuits of the device and cause irreparable damage. Leave the phone to dry overnight, no matter how desperately you may need it.
The next day you should be able to reassemble the phone and try it out to see if it works. You may need to replace the battery if it has become severely damaged.
If replacing the battery does not work and if the phone does not turn back on straight away after 24 hours of drying then you will need to take the unit back to the place you brought it from. Most shops will replace or repair broken phones, sometimes you may be charged but it really depends on what your deal is with the shop or phone company. Phones brought online will be more difficult to get repaired.
Really it is better if you don't drop the phone in water in the first case! Yet we are all human and these things happen!
