Why do so many people when using the word "better" do not finish the comparison . You see you can be a good driver but if you are a better driver I need to know with whom you are comparing yourself . Simply put if you are a better driver it raises the question better than who? For instance if good driver has no speeding tickets in five years , you could say a better driver than the first driver would have no speeding tickets in ten years . In which case if you made that statement I could raise several points to argue if I beg to differ. Even if you said the best driver is one who has not had a speeding ticket if twenty years I would still want to argue with you.
If you are confused slightly then I will give you the following examples of the misuse of the word "better" ;-
This coffee tastes better. Better than what? Sump oil?
Drink this.It will make you feel better. Better than what? Better than constipation?
Use this pen ,it's better. Better than what ? A quill?
Please forgive me for being pedantic but it annoys me to come across the frequency in which the word "better" is left for you to assume the rest of the comparison.
If I carry my point to the extreme I could assume that I am free to argue the reasons why it is better to be a non driver and then add ,to finish the comparison ,than a driver who has had fifty speeding tickets in two years. If that were the case then I have the basis for my arguments. Perhaps you want to argue the reasons why it better to be a non driver of a semi trailer and then add , to finish the comparison , than a ninety year old man suffering from myopia.
My Aunt was a pedagogue. Ever since I was a small boy I had to listen to her "Sermons on the mount" every Sunday afternoon after morning church and the midday meal. Such was her stickler for the correct use of the English language that she has passed her lack of approbation of anyone who did not understand the correct use of "good," "better," and "best" onto me. She has passed away now but she would be absolutely furious with the advertising people and other people who do not finish comparisons if she were alive today. She would not believe the extent of the corruption of the English language.
However I am not as obtuse as you may think I am. I assume that the I am being asked to supply reasons why it's better to be a non -driver (of a motor vehicle than a driver of a motor vehicle) Forgive me but I am still struggling with this article. I know I have sounded like some frustrated school teacher who has completely missed the point but do make allowances for me please. It is difficult to arrive at the subject for comparison when you could go off on as many tangents of your choice as still not be right.
Bearing in mind I am simply assuming that you are after reasons why it's better to be a non-driver (as per previous paragraph) then I would say a non driver can relax any enjoy the journey by looking at the scenery while a driver has to concentrate on the road . Secondly a non driver ,simply because he cannot drive, can't be fined for speeding. It seems pointless going any further.
You see I don't really know the basis for this article. I feel all I have done is made you feel what it was like to be in the audience of my Aunt's "sermon on the mount" every Sunday.
Actually if my Aunt was alive she may well be delighted with this article however I don't think her praise would extend to say I was any better at composition. Oh my, some lessons are hard to learn. I meant to say "better at composition than any of her compositions."
