More of us look for eco-friendly practice. If we have already taken the first steps at home, taking a trip can blind us from this resolution we have to fight for our environment. Here are simple tips that will allow us to enjoy, learn and minimize negative impacts caused by traveling.
Choose carefully your destination.
Using air transportation can add a considerable load on your carbon foot print. Before traveling, reflect on what motives would make you choose a destination over another, this to avoid flying long haul when you could have found same features closer. "Zero-emission" aircrafts are not to be announced before fifty more years!
Have an itinerary.
By checking and getting information regarding accommodation, transportation and tour operators, you will be able to identify businesses that are concerned about environmental issues. Organizations such as Green Globe offer to tourism businesses guidelines to help them take better decisions for sustainability. Look for the organization logo, which will be displayed as long as the participants manage their practice.
Get involve in ecotourism actions.
More countries have developed ecotourism activities such as conservation projects. Learning about endangered species and getting closer to the natural environment helps you contribute. As an example, New Zealand, which is known as a long haul destination have implemented an interesting eco-friendly action which consist of selling trees that are going to be named and planted by visitors. Tourists will then have the opportunity to see their tree from home through GPS.
Respect restrictions.
When visiting attractions, pay attention to the signs and guidelines. Outdoors and leisure areas need to be maintained carefully. Visitors don't always behave in favor of the environment, and sacred sites or restricted areas should stay protected.
Share your experience!
Telling your friends about your ecotraveling experience can only promote green practice. Most of us feel concerned, but not enough dare trying. Suggesting places you have enjoyed will only convince more people that ecotraveling not only can be fun and rewarding, it is more importantly one more step toward sustainability.
