Simple Magic Rituals: Burning Candles

Burning candles has long been associated with magic and religious rituals. The flame purifies, and can also destroy, but first and foremost it is used to focus the mind and energies.

Burning candles is one of the simplest forms of magic, as it requires few specialist ingredients and can be practiced almost anywhere. When using candles for rituals, you should always pick a brand new candle. This is because previously used candles may have picked up sensations and feelings from previous rituals. In very specific cases this may be required but most of the time you need the candle to be as pure as possible in order to focus its energy on the task at hand.

While the size and shape of the candles are not relevant, the colors have great significance. You should always prefer solid candles to dipped ones.

Here are a few examples of color significance in magic:

White Truth, Purity, Peace and Spirituality
Yellow Creativity, Memory and Intellect
Red - Strength, Energy, Courage, Desire and Potency
Black - Protecting, Binding, Reversing hexes

There are ways to increase the potency of a color, or to mix it with other attributes: please refer to my article on "dressing candles" for further information. If the color required is not available, it is always best to use a "dressed" white candle than to substitute colors.
