leave only footprints'. Shallow ones.
These are all fantastic tips for the eco-friendly traveler, but there's no need to go out of the city to Go Green.
San Francisco's Powell Street cable car, the BART train and bus number 30 will all get you within a hop, skip and jump of 466 Bush Street. The Orchard Garden is the city's colorful addition to the rainbow. No longer just known for the pink hues of the vibrant, gay community lifestyle that have many flocking to enjoy the city's delights, San Fran is now adding Green to the mix.
Approved by the U.S Green Building Council, The Orchard Garden incorporates an eco-friendly ethos into it's operations as well as it's design. Even the house-keepers are reaping the benefits of using environmentally - and people - friendly products.
Non-toxic glues, woods derived from sustainable forests and recycled materials abound... right down to the concrete mixed to make the fly ash foundations.
It doesn't end there. When you leave you room for dinner, the lights will turn off as you take the key. Head down to dinner and you will have a fantastic selection of organic produce on offer, grown locally. Why not try the Organic Carrot Risotto, sprinkled with delectable goat cheese and drizzled with white truffle oil. And complement it with a glass of Alma Rosa Pinot Gris made from organically grown grapes.
When you leave, your towels will be cleaned and your bedding 'greenwashed' and the house keepers will be smiling, not just because you left a few dollars on the sustainable forest, maple side-table, but because their hands are now soft and supple once again and their lungs clear.
The Orchard Garden certainly does everything it can to tread lightly, but this doesn't
reduce your responsibility as an environmentally conscious individual.
Going Green doesn't have to mean traveling a long distance; try a relaxing city break. And if you're in San Francisco, you don't need to go somewhere over the rainbow; just beside it will do.
