one likes to be annoyed when they are trying to indulge in their passion. Instead, I took mental notes and on commercials I would ask him what a term meant, or why a ref had made a particular call. I can't quite describe the sheer love of the game reflected in his eyes as he shared his vast knowledge with me. As I learned more about the game something unexpected happened.
I started to see how wrong I was. This was not a playground for primitive behavior. This was an arena for thought and skill. It had the strategy of chess and the poetry of motion combined with the thrill of chance. This was a physical manifestation of will and heart staged on the last frontier of ritualized violence. This was civilized war that followed a code. A battleground that allowed each man to strive for individual recognition, but taught that the true synthesis of victory was the synergy of the group. The stakes were glory and the chance to honor the legacy of their franchise. This was a drama where the challenge of a rival could prove to each man that he was worthy of his place in greatness. This was an opportunity for each group of men to find redemption for past failures. Even in the moments of heart break that recorded a new failure, this was a reason to light the fires of passion.
The Football gods demanded hard work, fiery purpose, and necessary sacrifice, but in the fleeting moment that they smile down upon you, there is no force that can strip you of that accomplishment.
No wonder Football has captivated so many generations. Even the average person has the chance to share in a moment of greatness that is extended by the team for them to witness and savor. But, it is the true fans who are so loyal that they are also share the agony of defeat.
Even if you can't appreciate the philosophical or strategical beauty of Football, if you submit to the experience with an open mind, you can ride the wave of sheer excitement that pulses through the veins of a true fan.
