Tips for networking your way to a new job

There have been many, many studies that show networking to be the number one way to get a new job. It depends on the type of job and the industry you're in, of course, but even wait staff who want to (say) move ten miles closer to home are more likely to get a job in a local restaurant by talking to their boss and acquaintances than simply applying online.

The biggest barrier to successful networking is getting started. People are unsure how to go about it, don't think they know enough people or are just plain shy. Here are some tips on getting started in career networking.

People Know People

Don't assume your friends and family aren't in the know. You'd be surprised how connected people are - they either know someone, or know someone who knows someone. This is a key point. When I was looking for a job my in-laws elderly neighbor happened to know a head-hunter they met at the local community center, and off I went.

Don't Talk to Strangers (at first)

You need to start networking with the people you know, rather than cold calling someone you've never met. Pick a few friends you know will help you and go from there. This eases you into it and quite often yields good returns almost immediately.

Decide What You Want (and what you will say)

You need to decide on your goals because these will affect who you talk to and how you talk to them. Once you know what you want, come up with a few sentences that describe them briefly. This will be a very useful in conversation.

Don't Ask For What Can't Be Given

You need to identify the people who can give you a job and don't assume everyone can. If you ask someone for a job and it's not in their power to give it, they may not help you. If you ask for their help upfront, they will respond and help you find the right people.

Just Do It

You may be a little shy, or even fearful, of asking people for help, but you need to just do it and get over it. Once you start it becomes a lot easier, and that little prepared speech will be used again and again.

Just bear these tips in mind and you'll be off and running in no time.
