" Would humor make a difference?"
That would depend on the situation. Here's an example:
I was at the doctor's office; I had an apportionment with a new doctor. So, I came in twenty minutes early to get the paper work out of the way. Then I sat down and waited.
A man came in ten minutes past my appointment time. Sitting next to me he asked nicely, "What doctor I was there to see?"
I told him and he started laughing hysterically
A little miffed I asked, "What was so funny?"
"Well you see, that doctor is never on time. As a matter of fact, he usually see's his patients, hmmmabout two hours later than their appointed time."
I turned to the receptionist for confirmation. She was listening in on our conversation anyway. She nodded in agreement, then shrugged in an apologetic manner.
The man's name was called and he headed to see his doctor. About a half hour later he came out. He saw me still sitting there and started laughing. Then he quickly left the office, still laughing.
I am sure that those belly laughs he had at my expense helped in his daily routine.
As for me, it just pissed me off.
My doctor finally did arrive. Two hours late. I wasn't laughing, especially when the nurse asked me, "Why was I complaining?" Then added, "Did you have somewhere else you need too be?"
I did find out why this doctor was perpetually late. "He hates mornings and likes to sleep in." Those were his exact words.
With a deadpan look I asked him, "Then why make appointments when your not here?"
He smiled, spoke softly sounding a lot like a car salesmen and said. "I'll need to talk to the receptionist so she doesn't do that again."
"Hey, Doctor. How long have you been in this office?" I asked just as sweetly.
"About five years." was his answer as he wrote out my prescription, "make your next appointment for ten in the morning." He smiled. "I should be in by ten-thirty."
So answering the question; "Would humor make a difference?"
That would depend entirely on if you're seeing that doctor. Or, if you were the lucky one walking out the door gut laughing
