What does the future hold for Nintendo? Well, prior to the Wii, it seemed that in the console division, it was on its out way out and would then leave the competition to Sony and Microsoft. The Wii was made and to be honest, it was criticized due to the stigma on Nintendo of being a kiddie' system. It is true that most games are not rated M on the system and there's no getting around it. Though there have been some games made in that rating, it's a matter of more are concerned how it looks than how it plays.
Nintendo has a very strong 1st party. It has been known to be much better than anyone else that could be imagined. The earliest game was Donkey Kong though on the Atari 2600 with Jumpman, Mario as we would later know him to be. While that would be a signature franchise to start things off with Nintendo, it wasn't until Super Mario Bros. came out on the NES that really started the trend in video gaming.
There are other major franchises developed by Nintendo during that time that would become main stays like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, and recently Super Smash Bros. Other notable franchises got their start being Castlevania, Contra, which has the most recent one Contra 4 on the DS, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Mega Man X, Duck Hunt, and there are many others as well not mentioned, it's just difficult to remember everyone of them. When Nintendo came into the picture, the gaming world changed and many ways for the better. While there were 3rd party games, there were also games unlicensed getting released on the NES. Most of which except for Wisdom Tree got in trouble by Nintendo but I am not so sure. The only way to truly tell is the way the cartridge looks and also there is no seal of approval.
When the Super Nintendo came along, it pretty much was the end of the unlicensed games being put on Nintendo's system. The only game that I know of that came out and that was on a review of Bible Games on Nintendo by the Angry Video Game Nerd being Super 3D Noah's Ark, a Wolfenstein 3D clone just using Noah.
The last of the cartridge era would be with the N64 and didn't go as well. To be honest, I don't think it's that bad of a system but it came down to the CD being the next big thing and that's what did Nintendo in for a while and then if that wasn't enough, the Gamecube really fell down rock bottom below Microsoft's new console the Xbox. At the time, I had wondered what could Nintendo pull off and see if there is any way of actually pulling it off and getting back
