I have to start by saying it is a very individual decision. I happen to agree with the yes side, only because I am not taking it, even though my doctor says I am in need of it, but refuses to give it to me. I have an ovary syndrome and no Pituitary gland, the master gland for controlling all of the other hormones in my body, so I have no trigger to start hormones, or level them out.
This has led to thyroid problems requiring two surgeries and radioactive isotope therapy, which scared me more than estrogen ever could. Each woman has specific genetic qualities that determine her needs in all areas of hormones in her body. Not all women will have blood clots, strokes or heart attacks. Not all women will experience hot flashes, mood swings and temper flares, migraine headaches etc. during menopause. Not all women can be helped by taking estrogen's for any reason.
But for the few, who have been cheated by their own genetic makeups, estrogen can indeed better, not only the quality of their lives, but in their health as well. But it takes a very good Doctor to determine those genetic problems, and prescribe what their patient needs as opposed to what the doctor prefers not to prescribe because of their own preferences. And that is hard to find, for Doctors these days don't really treat their patients according to how their body functions. It's sort of like, when you've seen one, you've seen them all, type of thinking,
and prescribing.
There are many reasons not to take estrogen for many. There are ample reasons to take estrogen for others. I am one of the others and I solved my problem by researching natural herbs that supply natural estrogen and they work for me quite nicely, although the cost is higher than a prescription for bio-estrogens{which are natural estrogens from humans}. For many, this may be costlier than they can afford, so do your homework. Ask the library what books you could get to research the information, check out the natural herbals available at your local health food stores, then try out two or three brands for a minimum of six weeks to find the one that helps you the most.I take Phyto Estrogen, a natural herb and plant estrogen supplement, in six capsules daily. There are at least seven different products to choose from, but the Phyto Estrogen works the best for myself and my bodies needs.
As for one size fits all yes or no's,estrogen is one of those grey areas simply because we are all so unique, so different in the ways our bodies function, each woman is the best judge of what she needs and what she doesn't, what works for her and what doesn't. Each of us,all by ourselves, are the best judge of what to choose for ourselves. Not an easy job at all, but we're the only one that knows our bodies better than anyone, so stick to your guns, plant your feet and hold your ground when you know you are right. But only when you have researched your options, symptoms, and had a good long talk with your doctor!, do you step on the other road of natural options, or any other option at all.
