Many writers on Helium are hoping for a beautiful blue star to go along with their names. After all they look lovely, they stand for something good, and they make one feel good about their writing. These people (I was one of them at one time) are hoping for a great equation as to how they can get their blue writing star(s). They want a do a plus b and you are sure to get the lovely blue star. But it isn't that simple. They star system doesn't really make it easy to get the blue star you may be dreaming of. However, there are ways that you can improve your likely hood of getting a writing star. It doesn't take brain surgery techniques or anything truly special. Even you can earn a star!
First of All...The Math.
Helium takes all of your articles and looks at them. I am sure it is probably Helium's computer system and not really Helium itself, but none the less. Your bottom ten percent are dropped. This is important to remember. Next they average out all your other articles. Writers with their top 90% averaging in the top fourth will get a star.
Writing Well.
It is without question that writing your best helps to place your articles higher in the category you are writing. However, just telling you to write a good article isn't really much help. After all, I have never set out to write a bad article and I am sure that others haven't either. Who joins a title category that has 49 articles saying, "Man I hope I am number 50!" However, writing your best is always important. Don't force yourself to write. Don't publish articles you think are bad. Instead, save them on your computer, and come back and edit them later. Then publish them.
Write What You Know.
This is one of the most important things I can suggest to you. After all, writing what you know will lead to stronger statements, clearer articles, and overall improvement on your general writing style. You will avoid confusion, and weak or wishy washy articles. Sticking with things you know or opinions you feel strongly about will always lead to better articles.
Write a Lot.
There are a lot of people who spend a lot of time working on their first star. They have ten or fifteen articles and want that star so much that they keep leapfrogging everything they wrote. While the leapfrog can be a very valuable tool, it is important to remember that quantity can be very helpful. The more articles you write, the larger your bottom ten percent can be, and the more option you have for improving your average.
