For those of us who lived through 1980's fashion the first time around, the idea of returning to this acid-washed-plagued decade is enough to send shivers down our spines. However, contemporary designers are taking the best of the 80s trends and reimagining them in a way that comes across as very modern and surprisingly fresh.
Trend #1: The statement accessory.
Designers are showing wide vinyl belts, platform heels, and oversized patent clutches in a variety of bright greens, yellows, and pinks that strike a balance between the loud neons and preppy bright pastels of the decade.
The modern way to wear these brights is against a pastel or neutral like this season's safari-inspired khakis; the unexpected contrast keeps the look fresh and not at all predictable. If bright colors aren't your thing, these accessories work just as well in a faux python.
Trend #2: Graphic prints.
While designers are showing a variety of prints this season, including florals and tribals, the one that may be the most wearable is the update of the 80's graphic print. Designers are mixing blocks of black, white, and grey with pops of color on their tunic tops and dresses; the contrast of the softer cut with the graphic print results in a completely wearable look.
Modernize this look by mixing and matching your prints; stick to a similar color palette to avoid looking too chaotic. Also, stick with larger prints, which will camouflage any body imperfections, while tiny prints will only serve to highlight them.
Trend #3: Asymmetrical cuts.
The last 80's inspired look that is everywhere this spring is the asymmetrical cut, particularly the one-shoulder dress. In a variety of styles, ranging from simple cuts in bright colors to girly, eyelet whites, this is one trend that anyone can get on board with.
Avoid looking dated by staying away from huge ruffles and poufy bows that can end up looking more prom and less runway. Keep the look away from being cliche by choosing a looser cut instead of something fitted, and a flirty flat or on-trend gladiator sandal instead of a pump or coordinated heel.
The last thing to keep in mind when bringing back the 80's is to not actually bring them back; there's a big difference between buying bright purple plastic earrings and dragging out your stretched-out orange leggings. Make sure you let the 80's inspire your look, but not take it over!
