"Sexina: Pop star P.I." is a new campy comedy making fun of the music industry. Remember, she's not Britney Spears - a sexy pop superstar surrounded by adoring fans. She's "Sexina."
The movie opens with the singing sensation (played by Lauren D'Avella) pinned into her limousine by a throng of adoring fans. Her bodyguard "Chainsaw" wants to punch them all to the ground, but the singer loves her fans, sure that they also love her back. But this international superstar hides an amazing secret. By night, she's also a top-notch secret investigator, determined to destroy corruption in the music industry. Will she meet her match when she goes up against an evil music-industry mastermind (played by Adam West, the original Batman of the 1960s TV series.)?
The opening credits are slick, mimicking the opening of a James Bond movie. Davy Jones of the Monkees was brought in to sing the movie's theme, giving a cool and intriguing delivery to its tongue-in-cheek lyrics. ("She tops the charts, she sings the best the press will never let her rest, she's famous. But this is just the face we see, she has one more identity...") The movie's montage of silhouettes hints at spy-themed action. But soon enough the movie's campy ambitions will be obvious.
There's also a sub-plot about the superstar's role in bringing hope to her adoring high school fans. The mean girls at Britney High School are tormenting Sexina's most loyal fan, who's determined to prove to everyone that she's cool by winning an essay contest. (It's first prize: a visit from Sexina.) When she wins the contest, she's treated to a superstar-sized shopping spree. But she's already won the respect of the school's quarterback, just by standing up for herself. This plot is played for laughs rather than drama. The film-makers are just adding on one more set of ridiculous cliches, to better parody of the music industry.
Some of the actors are better than others, but the film's impossible plot invites the audience meet them halfway - like any good camp comedy. At one point, Sexina is attacked by...a ninja. And she's unable to question a crucial witness because he's killed by what's obviously a man in a cheap bear costume. It's may or may not be the best movie you'll ever see about a superstar/music industry spy. But it's definitely one of the most ridiculous.
