Nowadays more and more brides are deciding they want their dress to be something unique and unexpected. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your wedding dress.
Don't go to bridal shops for your dress. Many women are so concerned with having the perfect dress that they forget to look outside the box. Not only can you save money by avoiding bridal shops, you can also find something one of a kind elsewhere. Consider stopping by your local thrift stores. They usually have a few dresses there you can see if you like. The idea of using someone else's wedding dress might be appalling to you, but consider this: you do need "something old". You can find many good quality items in thrift stores that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Take a look, you might be surprised at what you find.
Add some color. Historically, blue was considered the color of purity and used in weddings long before white was common ("something blue"). Consider having a dress that is entirely a color other than white, or that has a large portion of it in another color. What's your favorite color? Try incorporating that into your dress.
Shop around prom time. Consider wearing a prom dress. Many prom dresses are elegant and stunning. If you shop right around prom, you might be able to find something that you absolutely love. Also consider looking at bridesmaids dresses for your wedding dress. Often times, those dresses are far more appropriate for an individual than an actual traditional wedding dress. You can also usually get them in white and they're usually far less expensive.
Make your own dress or ask a friend to do it. If you're good at sewing or know someone who is, maybe you should consider asking them to do it for you. You can essentially design your own dress, use whatever fabrics and colors you want, and have the ideal dress for your wedding. It's a perfect way to create your dream dress.
Be sure to consider where you're having your wedding. If you're having an outdoors wedding in the fall, it might be a little chilly for a knee length, strapless dress. Keep the location and season in mind when picking out your dress. The last thing you want is to be distracted on your big day because you're too cold or too hot.
In the end, it's your big day so do what feels right. If you see a dress you love, go for it. Don't worry about what other people will think, it's your wedding, not theirs. Have fun and enjoy the process. And most importantly: Congratulations!
