Buyer's guide to healthy groceries

you have probably noticed that you have no convenience, ready made meals or processed foods in your trolley. Even worse there are no cakes, biscuits, chips or any of the snacks you love and no soft drinks either.

The reason being these are all bad for you and you wanted to go "healthy" grocery shopping.

All of these foods contain refined products such as sugar, saturated fats and high levels of salt and additives. Types of additives include preservatives, colorings, flavor enhancers, stabilizers, thickeners and emulsifiers. Too many of these foods can make you ill, overweight or cause you to have allergic reactions.

Cakes, pastries, doughnuts, pies and biscuits have lots of saturated fats, salt, sugar and refined ingredients in them. Soft drinks - mostly sugar. Refined products have had a lot of the nutrients taken out of them and they are high in sugar and fat, but low in fibre.

Processed foods such as cheese and pressed meats and convenience foods such as powdered sauces and gravies are high in salt, colorings and a have whole array of additives in them.

If you do buy any of these products make sure they don't form a major part of your diet. Read the labels on all packets, cans and jars of processed and convenience food to check for ingredient content and the amount of additives they contain. The more numbers shown listed in brackets the more additives the product has.

Sometimes the labels can be so confusing it is hard to know what you are really buying.

To regain control of what you eat and to monitor the amount of saturated fat, sugar and salt in your diet consider making your meals without the aid of ready made sauces or powdered meal bases.

Try making your own biscuits, and cakes or substitute popcorn, nuts, fresh or dried fruits for snacks as an alternative.

By making your own pie filings, sausages and hamburgers you can be sure of the amount and quality of the meat that is in them.

In fact if you plan to buy healthy groceries you could find yourself spending more time in the kitchen preparing food, but for all the health benefits you will achieve you will find it will be worth it. Also by buying less snacks, processed foods and pre prepared meals you will see your food bill going down because fresh and unprepared foods cost less to buy.

There you have it. A trolley packed with healthy foods for a healthier you. Now all you have to do is clean out your fridge and cupboards so you have a place to put it all.
