Buyer's guide to healthy groceries

So you have decided you want to eat in a more healthy way.

Have you been looking in the mirror lately, not liking what you are seeing? You are overweight, your skin looks bad and you just don't feel well (and that was before you looked in the mirror!).

Sounds like your system needs a spring clean and your body needs some exercise. Lets start by going for a walk.

An appropriate place for you to walk around in your situation is the grocery store, because that is where the answer lies.

The first thing to remember before you grab your trolley. Do not go in without a plan. If you don't make a list and plan what you are going to buy you will just come out with all the stuff you usually get and that is not the reason you came to the store.

Now you want to eat healthy, that is the reason you are looking for healthy groceries. Right? To eat healthy you have to buy healthy, so some changes to your shopping habits are going to have to be made.

The basis of healthy grocery shopping is to make sure you buy foods from each of the five food groups. Fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates and fibre (bread, grains, pasta etc.), meat and protein, milk and dairy and fats.

The main key is to think fresh. Let it be your mantra. Fresh, fresh, fresh, especially while you are in the fruit and vegetable section deciding what to buy. Fresh fruits and vegetables are important for a healthy diet because they provide vitamins, minerals and fibre to help your body function and defend it from illness.

Also add fruit and vegetable juices to your trolley as an alternative to cordials and soft drinks or invest in a juicer to make your own fruit and vegetable juice.

Everybody needs carbohydrates to get through their day. Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. Foods high in carbohydrates are usually low fat, have some protein and are rich in starch and fibre. Fibre is important to remove waste from the body to prevent constipation and other bowel problems such as cancer.

To get carbohydrates in your trolley you need to buy wholemeal bread, cereals, pasta, brown rice and potatoes.

When buying cereals go for natural unprocessed products such as porridge, non-toasted muesli or bran. Don't go for the novelty cereals because they are low in nutritional value and high in sugar content. Instead choose brands that have lots of dried fruits or honey to provide a more natural healthy sweet taste. Alternatively you can add these things to your breakfast yourself.

Next you need to buy foods rich in protein.
