Why is poetry so hard to define?

Life IS poetry

Poetry is everywhere. In the depth of ones soul, at our fingertips, and in the moment we look into the eyes of those we love. Poetry is in our memories, in the miniscule flashes of our childhood and perhaps beyond. We are empowered, blessed and even forever changed by prose. Are poetry just words that make up flowing sentences; or is there more to it?

What is poetry to you?

Mother earth bestows upon us poetry each day as the sun wakes and falls asleep on our horizon. Poetry falls from the thunderous skies in each droplet of rain, washings away the debris caused by life. All that I see around me inspires me. We have all heard the saying, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is true of poetry. For me, it is being in nature; I allow the visual emotion to complete me. Then I am inspired to write! I strongly believe that one must write what they know, what they live. Life experience is poetry! Our every day, humdrum daily routine is poetry. Look around. What do you see?

Poetry can be words, art, and even music. My favourite artist is John William Waterhouse, a famous artist in the romantic period. He was a Poet, not with words, but with paint on canvas. Poetry whispered into a loved one's ear and screamed out at the top of his lungs at a rave! Eminem is a Poet. I like the way he puts sentences together to write a rap song. His life, his anger and his pain fuels his emotions and poetry comes out of that. All things lead to inspiration.

Love is the poetry of the heart. When we love one another, we are creating poetry for the soul. The friendships we have are poetic ties that bind us together as human beings. We all need these bonds to have a joyful existence in life. These connections give the holistic heart the reason to live for!

Poetry in motion: the tone and rhythm of society, the clash and clang of moving parts, the hum of highway traffic, this is all poetry. A train mutters by, and I stand still and watch, mesmerized, as I did when I was living in my childhood. Chug-a-lug, chug-a-lug. A nearby dog yips as the locomotion travels through this place. I watch it go by and find myself wondering where it is travelling.

At the end of a day, try as I might, I cannot fall asleep. Thankful that it is showery, the sound of the falling rain is a comfort somehow. Soon I will fall under. Plit-plat, ping. Plit-plat, ping. It makes me think this is what the sound of little angel's feet must sound like.

Poetry is in, around, within, and surrounding all things. Is that not also true of energy? Energy is all things. The two seem to go hand in hand. Poetry is in the breath of a loved one, a smile, the gregarious laughter of a friend that fills the room and echoes in your heart.

'May my soul forever bathe in good energy
Of light and poetic warmth
Of what is possible
And not what I cannot do
May I discover each day what is pure and true
And see in all the faces what is good
And may energy of a Godly source be my guide'

Poetry simply, is. It is effortless. Just as nature is, poetry does not try to exist. It simply does. Birds do not try to fly; it is in their nature to do so. We as humans, I believe, have the ability to create poetry. It is in our nature to be poetic. All species have innate characteristics that make them unique. The human brain is influential, extraordinary and magnificent!
