Networking is an invaluable tool in life and in any career, so much so that people often use their networking skills without even realizing they are doing it.
If you're looking to find a new job or change career, your networking efforts need to be targeted. A key first point it to identify what you want, be it information, a job opportunity, the right recruitment company to handle your job search; or, if you are self-employed, the best person to help you source office materials, an accountant, a bank which will offer you a good deal. Word of mouth is a powerful way to get to where you need to be.
In terms of careers and professional development, one useful networking tool is that of professional organizations, many of whom will have their own local, national and international networks. Meetings, on-line forums and social events will form part of the calendar, and so provide a useful way to "get in" or talk to people who can help you move forward.
In addition, find out what networks are available in your region. These may cover a range of specialist groups such as women returners (in a particular sector, sometimes), business owners and those in a specific sector. Your local government office will be able to put you in the right direction of any available networks.
Membership of charities and community organizations can also be a way to expand your network, especially if you've lost touch with people you were at school or college with. If you take on any sort of active role in such an organization, not only does it increase your database of contacts, but it gives you the opportunity to prove your worth and give people a flavor of the person you are, so they will have more confidence in putting you in touch with their valued contacts.
There is networking etiquette; drop people who've helped you a line to thank them and let them know how their advice has helped. If someone has given you a possible contact to follow up, check that you can use their name first before plunging in and getting in touch.
And remember that it is important to give and help others as well as to receive help. Make the most of opportunities to help others get on in life and reach the goals they aspire to; apart from anything else, the time could soon come around when you need that person's help they could be in the company you're looking to break into!
