IDIOTS GUIDE TO THE 2008 COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON
Well, football is over in two weeks, and baseball doesn't start for another 3 months. Guess what that means? It's college basketball time. I have comprised a user friendly guide that will get you ready for the final 2 months of the regular season.
Chapter 1 THERE ARE A TON OF GOOD FRESHMEN THIS YEAR
I think the "go to school for a year rule" already paid dividends with last years stars Kevin Durant and Greg Oden. As a whole though, this years crop might be even stronger. Eric Gordon(Indiana), Derrick Rose(Memphis), O.J. Mayo(USC), and Jonny Flynn(Syracuse) comprise one of the best groups of Freshmen guards we have ever seen. Throw in big men Kevin Love(UCLA), Michael Beasley(K-State), and Kyle Singler(Duke), and you have got a lot of young talent to watch night in and night out. Side note: both Singler and Love are from Oregon. Who would have thought that two of the best players in the country are from Oregon of all places? Furthermore, how scary would the Oregon Ducks look this year if they both stayed home for school?
Chapter 2 WHEN IN DOUBT, WATCH THE ACC
The ACC has been the predominant conference in college basketball for many years. Since the Big East expanded a few years back, many have labeled them as the premier conference in the land. But for my money, I take the ACC on a nightly basis for these reasons:
1) The atmosphere in each gym top to bottom is something special. I compare ACC basketball to SEC football. These people live, bleed, and sweat college basketball.
2) There are no weak teams in the conference. Even former bottom feeders such as FSU and Miami have turned into legitimate contenders. Every other conference in America has at least one team that is a perennial loser.
3) Coaching. Coach K, Roy Williams and Gary Williams have combined for over two thousand victories in their careers. Leonard Hamilton has coached in the NBA, Paul Hewitt has reached an NCAA final, and Seth Greenberg has been very successful every school he has coached. You aren't going to find a better group of leaders anywhere.
Chapter 3 WATCH THESE GREAT RIVALRY GAMES
Kentucky vs. Florida, Louisville vs. Kentucky, Texas vs. Oklahoma, Texas vs. Texas Tech, Ohio State vs. Indiana, USC vs. UCLA, Syracuse vs. Uconn, North Carolina vs. N.C. State, Duke vs. Maryland, and of course the biggest of all Duke vs. North Carolina.
I firmly believe Duke vs. Carolina is the best rivalry in sports(I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge Blue
