Victorian England. The role is played with passion and anger as we see the mission of revenge being lived and breathed in this harrowing melodrama. This is a role that when Depp was interviewed afterwards and asked "when did you know you could sing" he replied he knew that he still couldn't. It shows once again that the actor is prepared to stay clear of a comfort zone, forever prepared to challenge himself in the jobs he takes and decisions he makes. The relationship between Depp and director Tim Burton really is a golden one, with this the latest in a growing line of projects they have worked on together. Depp fully deserved the Golden Globe he received for best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
This was one of those films that many would have believed should never be remade after the classic 1971 version with Gene Wilder. That was until the magic of the Depp/Burton combination struck again. Depp plays the eccentric and brilliant Willy Wonka in an updated depiction that is much more well rounded than the original. The portrayal is believable throughout and we see the vulnerability of the character again when Willy Wonka meets the family of Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) in their overcrowded home. It is with that meeting the audience is shown, via flashback, the disciplined and often sad childhood faced by Willy Wonka as a result of his strict father and we can understand why he is the way he is in adulthood. Such was the strength of his performance that Depp was nominated for a Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a motion picture - musical or comedy.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Tim Burton once again working with his golden boy Johnny Depp in this adaptation of the classic story 'Legend of Sleepy Hollow'. We see Depp as Ichabod Crane a New York constable in 1799 sent to the settlement of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of three murders, where each victim was discovered with their head missing. The locals believe it to be the work of the ghostly headless horseman, but Ichabod Crane takes some convincing. It is only when continued evidence leads to the constable witness the ghost for himself that he truly believes and understands exactly what he is dealing with.
Finding Neverland (2004)
Depp breathes life into the portrayal of Peter Pan author J.M.Barrie as we see the details of the experiences that led to him writing the famous children's classic. The acting performance was warm and filled with depth and it was no surprise when Depp was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, BAFTA for Best Performance in a Leading Role, Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.
