as the eccentric pirate captain. It appears the role was created for him, even if the filmmakers took a little convincing, a decision that has proved to be extremely lucrative with the franchise that has resulted from it. Depp's decision to base the character on the Rolling Stones Legend Keith Richards was a masterstroke and the inclusion of Richards as Jack Sparrow's father in the final film was a fitting tribute.
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Once again a role that Depp was born to play in the film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's classic about the crazed journey in search of the "American Dream". Depp plays Raoul Duke the gonzo journalist alongside his Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo / Oscar Z. Acosta (Benicio Del Toro) on his drug taking escapades across Western America. This was another opportunity for Depp to thoroughly research for the part by spending a few months with Hunter S. Thompson prior to filming, to master his voice, his movements, behaviour and attitude. It proved to be time well spent as Thompson's writing was brought to life by the flawless acting performance of Depp.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Depp gives a memorable performance as the social outcast brought back to the sleepy suburbs after local avon lady Peg Bogs (Diane West) finds him alone in the mansion on top of the hill. Depp's acting is heartbreaking at times often without speaking, relying instead on the use of the eyes and expressions of his face. It takes things right back to the early days in cinema's silent movie days as we see one of the World's finest actors bringing an extraordinary character to life.
Ed Wood (1994)
Depp stars in this biopic as the legendary Edward D. Wood Jr, hailed as the worst director of all time. The film is set in the 1950's during the best-known period of his life where he made such films as 'Plan 9 From Outer Space', 'Glen or Glenda' and 'Bride of the Monster'. We see the touching friendship he had with the former great but now unemployed and ageing horror actor Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau). Depp's portrayal is full of depth and the audience is shown the harsh ridicule faced by the character from his peers, we also see the hilarious and touching scenes when Depp is kitted out in full transvestite attire with makeup, skirt, high heels, wig and of course the angora sweater that always proved to be the directors weakness.
