Has religion become obsolete in modern society? Society has not abandoned religion but has just replaced older versions of it with newer more modern versions. Modern society looks to a new gods to worship as well as new dogmas to practice. Sports heroes and drunken divas are currently replacing the virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and our divine creator as the new gods of society's disillusioned members.
Traditional religious practices and beliefs are steadfastly pushed out of the way to make room for new age astrology and occult beliefs. New age practices have become the most popular religious practices around the world.
What is the cause of this wave of new age beliefs? Why are so many young people turning away from traditional religions and beliefs? Young people are leaving churches in droves because they feel disillusioned with traditional religion. Churches are failing to draw younger generations to unto themselves.
A lack of spiritual fulfillment and a purpose in life may be reasons some young people turn away from traditional religions. Other reasons may include a search for something, somewhere to fill a void within themselves and a desire to engage in hedonism. Whatever the reasons are for replacing traditional religious beliefs with newer, nontraditional religious practices and belief systems that young people have, the fact remains that traditional churches are not fulfilling their spiritual needs. People seek out God because they have a need for him. Traditional churches are not meeting the spiritual and emotional needs of today's young people.
Emotional and spiritual needs, as well as, a need to belong to a community are reasons many of the young people in our society search elsewhere to find God. Society's cultures and subcultures existing today are based on hedonism, narcissism, sex and other values which are completely foreign to older generations. These values challenge the beliefs of traditional religious organizations. Young people reject the values of the older generations and accept newer beliefs based on their needs.
Traditional religion will continue to become obsolete if traditional religious organizations fail to change their approaches to embracing younger people as new members. What traditional religious leaders do not understand is how to meet the spiritual needs of today's younger generation.
