What is your favorite ethnic style of food and why?
If you are an American, the better question should be: Is there such a thing as ethnic' food anymore? We are the official melting pot after all and in my household, Spaghetti, Lasagna, Beef & Broccoli, and Tacos are many of our dinner staples!
Now, these foods (with the exception of the Chinese) have been greatly "Americanized" for our palates, but are still similar to the originals; at least in the ways that truly count!
If I were to truly vote on this subject at all, it would have to be satirical; I vote for The American Southern Cuisine! This is the cuisine I was raised on and let me tell you, there ain't nothing better than a pot of chicken and dumplin's or ribs that have been boiled to tender slabs of meat prior to being put into the oven!
We moved to the north about ten years back and I can say with certainty that the food down in the South is a whole different can of worms than what they have up here! Thank God for Cracker Barrel! If I don't feel like working all day in the kitchen to make a traditional Southern feast for my family, Cracker Barrel is there for me. I can call it in and pick it up and if I'm real clever, I can get it on plates before my man comes home and fool him into thinking it was me that slaved away after all!
There are foods from my neck of the woods that I wouldn't even eat on a dare; foods that my Daddy absolutely loved! Like Hawg jowls and Pigs brains scrambled up and he even eat the pig's feet! Can you imagine?
One of the funniest things I ever saw in my life (and the grossest too) was walking into my kitchen to see my big sister gnawing away on a Sow's ear! I was used to our Daddy eating things that weren't meant for human consumption, but seeing my sister that day nearly bowled me over completely!
Now, the better Southern food is a different story altogether. I could eat my fill of Fried Chicken, potato salad (mustard, please), watermelon (cooled in the crick), Deep Fried Okra and Rum Cakes!
It makes me hungry just thinking about home. Food was such an important event in our lives. We made up meals to have just to eat!
So, if you are looking for some real ethnic food, the kind you have never tried before, take a visit to a Southern state and enjoy!
Bon Appetite!
