It never fails to irk me when my friends call me up solely because they are bored. It just makes me want to shout at them, "Well, I wasn't bored until you called me." The reason that it bothers me so much is because boredom is a very contagious infliction. The simple fact is that as soon as the word "bored" is uttered, the conversation begins a kamikaze mission.
That's why I felt so reluctant to call my best friend, Liza, on the 3rd week of summer vacation. I was bored, and twiddling my thumbs had grown too redundant for me.
"Hey Liza...what's up?" I asked when she answered the phone. She sounded very cheery.
"Oh, hey. Not much, watching Marley," Marley was Liza's little sister, "How about you?"
"Not much, been kinda bored lately," as soon as I said it I could feel the conversation begin a downward spiral. Boredom is depressing.
Moment of silence.
"Sooo..."
"What?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing."
Moment of silence.
"Hmmm...," I sighed.
"Yeah, I know."
Moment of silence.
"Oh my gosh, I almost forgot," Liza exclaimed with the teenager giddiness that I was used to from her.
"What?" I asked, not matching her enthusiasm.
"Has George called you yet?"
"Huh? George? Why would George call me?" I asked. As soon as I had heard her mention the Magnificent G I dropped the magazine that I was flipping through and sat straight up.
George was the epitome of coolness. He was cute, he was sexy, and most importantly, he was the guy that I had crushed on for the past three years. Though Liza didn't share my opinions on George's greatness she became the go-between for me. In the name of friendship she be-friended him, relayed messages for me and invited him to a few of our outings. But unfortunately I was still too shy to talk to him, much less give him my phone number.
"Yeah Holly, I think he's finally coming around. Kacey told me that he asked her for your number."
"Liz, that is the best news ever."
"I know! Hold on...Yes mom!...Holly...nu huh, only like five minutes...okay...okay mom! I will!...Holly, I gotta go."
"Okay, bye."
"Call me if he calls you. I want a full report."
"Oh, you know I will."
"Bye hun."
"Bye."
That was the end of it. I was no longer bored, my life had taken on new meaning. George liked me.
For the rest of that day I kept vigil by the phone. I might have had a nervous breakdown if it hadn't been for call-waiting. My mother's thirty-minute conversations with
