Tips for the eco-friendly traveler

One of the great things about travel is that it allows you to explore the wonders of the earth. However, with the current crises in the environment, one might ask if these wonders will remain wonderful. The answer might depend on eco-friendly travel.

Eco-friendly travel begins with the mode of transportation you use to get to your destination. If you are traveling domestically, driving is the most eco-hostile form of transportation, whereas train travel is the most eco-friendly. However, for those traveling overseas, air travel is usually a necessity.

Unfortunately, the recent proliferation of affordable flights is partially responsible for the increase in carbon emissions. Fortunately, there's a solution. It's called carbon offset. First, go to carbonfund.org and use their calculator to determine how much carbon will be used on your flight and in other situations. This is called your carbon footprint. Based on this amount, you make a donation to an organization that supports carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, re-forestation and energy efficiency.

Once you arrive at your destination, try to use eco-friendly methods of transportation. Walking is the best, as well as the healthiest. If you are journeying from one part of the country to another, a train travel experience is a must. First off, if you travel overnight by train, you can save money on a hotel by booking a sleeper car. Second, train travel is an intriguing experience which allows you to meet locals and learn more about the culture.

Although modes of transportation have the most profound effect on the environment, there are other factors that are often overlooked when considering eco-friendly travel. For example, the excess plastic from repeated purchases of bottled water can be an environmental disaster. Consider this: In the United States, only a small portion of plastic water bottles is ever recycled. This problem is compounded in developing countries that lack the infrastructure to collect and process them. There is a solution: Carry your own reusable water bottle, and purchase a water purification system.

The foods you choose to eat while traveling overseas can have a significant effect on the environment. Opt for seasonal and local specialties, and avoid products that need to be shipped from half way around the world. Now let's talk about batteries. When you throw away your used batteries, the acid goes straight into the earth. Instead, bring along rechargeable batteries, and be sure to bring a portable charger.

Finally, eco-friendly travelers choose eco-friendly lodging. While many hotels now promote sustainable tourism by encouraging guests to reuse their towels and sheets, they are still hotels, and hotels use a good deal of energy. Opting for a vacation rental, especially an eco-friendly vacation rental can be a preferable solution. For example, check out the Alma Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona. This solar adobe home uses solar hot water and eco-friendly water catchments. www.desertretreat.com/

The earth is a beautiful place. Let's keep it that way for future generations to enjoy.
